What is the status of your 2023 tax return?
Has your 2023 state return been e-filed and accepted? Wait for it to be accepted before you amend.
If you haven’t e-filed or mailed your return yet. Just open your return, make any changes, and file when you're ready. If you have already printed your return, follow these steps to make changes.
If your tax return hasn't been processed yet or your e-filed return is still pending. Wait at least until the return is accepted before amending. It’s recommended that you wait a few weeks after acceptance to ensure the IRS has processed the return before amending.
If you only need to make specific changes to your state return, select your product below and follow the instructions.
Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you filed your amended state return and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency .
Just like the IRS, states, use a special form for an amended return. Many states also use the X suffix for the form number. Some states allow you to e-file amended returns while others require that you file a paper return.
Don't forget to attach a copy of your amended federal return (Form 1040-X) to your amended state return, if the state requires it, as is usually the case.
